Mr Pierre Jean COULON : Between a trans-European super grid and local energy islands

Ms, Mr, dear friends

1. The European Economic and Social Committee points out that energy transition is not just a technological issue but also a profoundly social and political challenge.

2. According to the EESC, European investments should be used effectively to fund an energy transition focused on citizens rather than those who have so far been involved in the fossil-based energy system.

3. The EESC invites the European Commission and the EU Member States to effectively ensure the envisaged role of citizens at the center of energy transition.

These are amongst the main messages of the EESC opinion on the “Between a trans-European super grid and local energy islands”, adopted at the EESC Plenary session on 18 September 2020.
